The Slowest Generation

The Wall Street Journal recently posted an article entitled “The Slowest Generation.”  The author’s basic premise is that there is a generation of runners who are out there just to complete a race, rather than compete.

Have you read the article?  What do you think?

  1. I’m not overly competitive in my racing, but I sure as heck want to beat my PR and give it all I have to cross the finish line strong. I don’t doColour Runs or other “parade” runs, too much money for people to walk a 5k and give minimal effort. Keep the timing chips and published results, that’s racing!

  2. Since I am new to running, I am just happy to complete a certain distance. As I get better, I think I will become more competitive because it’s in my nature. Great article! Thanks for sharing!

  3. Thought provoking article, but can’t say I really agree with the statistics used or the message. First, who cares if people are doing events just to finish, not everyone has to be competitive in athletics. If people are getting off the couch, then we should encourage them not write articles about how slow they are. Second, he says he is in the top 15% of his age group, which is all males, then says he is top 11% overall which includes all females. Someone in the comments pointed out that he was top 15% MALE overall, so there really wasn’t a giant disparity in finishing percentage to begin with.
